"Lawrence's highly energized and expressive tenor work throughout is a step up from last year's critically acclaimed Soul Carnival." -- Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times, March,1999
"There's a joyful spirit to the playing of Texas tenor Doug Lawrence (b.1956). His energy and bright ideas are contagious." -- CD Review, April, 1999
"You always try to be totally spontaneous when playing, and I think I've finally reached a point where it's all completely natural," says tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence. "I mean, whatever comes into my head I can translate to the horn." This could easily be an ad for the value of an old-school jazz education because Lawrence honed his skills in a series of big bands: the Benny Goodman Orchestra, the Buck Clayton Orchestra, the Grover Mitchell Orchestra, and the Loren Schoenberg Big Band. His latest album, High Heel Sneakers (Fable), features his regular bandmates Willie Jones III (drums), John Webber (bass), and Adam Scone (Hammond B-3), as well as special guests such as guitarist Peter Bernstein and percussionist Carlos "Potato" Valdes.
